Housed in an old heritage house at Lebuh Melayu in Penang, Chao Xuan (潮轩) is a Chinese restaurant that specialises in Teo Chew delights. Albeit Penang has many Chinese restaurants in town but Teo Chew delights or snacks seems to be scarce as compared to other Chinese foods. Chao Xuan has the strong element of Chinese traditional design... the entrance is made by the traditional Chinese red wooden door, while the interior is stuffed with the wooden furniture and some traditional Chinese decors.
Food-wise, the menu of Chao Xuan is packed of authentic traditional Teo Chew foods that able to thrill your taste buds. Notable highlights include the Teo Chew Chai Kuih and its intensely flavorful braised Teo Chew dishes, such as pork belly, duck, firm tofu, and etc. I particularly love the Fried Ku Chai Kuih (Chives Chai Kuih) at Chao Xuan, it's superb unexpectedly. Unlike the Steamed Chai Kuih, Fried Chai Kuih has a crispier skin and well-seasoned fillings. Besides of Chives Chai Kuih, Chao Xuan also serves the Yam Bean (Mangkuang) Chai Kuih and Traditional Or Kuih in store.
Besides Chai Kuih, the braised goodies serving at Chao Xuan is quite nice too. The porridge here is really an authentic Teo Chew Porridge, it's watery instead of thicker as same as Cantonese Porridge. For the braised duck, I thought it's skillfully cooked, the meat is tender and flavorful... so do with the Braised Pork Minced Rice we ordered. However, I thought the salted vegetable served aside could be slightly salty as compared to other restaurants.
Apart from that, Chao Xuan also served many other delectable dishes such as the Fried Noodles, Fried Rice Vermicelli, Toast, Curry Puff, Curry Chicken, Soup, Traditional Desserts and so on. Last but not least, you should also try out their traditional handcrafted local coffee to fuel up your day. In short, I thought Chao Xuan is a good place that able you to enjoy the authentic Teo Chew dishes, complete with a relaxing ambiance. Nevertheless, parking could be a challenge because the parking lot is limited.
